What many people tend to forget when trying to create a fun activity for kids is the fact that kids are naturally filled with an immense amount of energy. This means that when planning any form of activity, whether it’s yoga or sporting activity, it needs to be centered around fun.
Kids are some of the best people to work with and train when it comes to physical activities, Sadly, they lose interest very quickly and tend to not listen to any form of instructions. There are a few things that you need to keep in mind when training kids in yoga, as well as how you can use this to your advantage.
1. They Are Full of Energy
Children are a natural burst of energy. Each child has enough energy to power a wind turbine. While this might seem like a bad thing, it’s quite good. Using their energy to your advantage is one of the best things you can do. Making yoga fast-paced by incorporating some fun poses, such as the zoo yoga poses in faced paced sequences. E.g.
- Cheeta pose
- Camel pose or
- Elephant showering pose
Having the kids make the sounds of the animals as well could help maintain and use their energy in the yoga class.
2. Very Imaginative
Kids love using their imagination, especially when it comes to traveling the world. Have every kid in the class close their eyes and have their fingers pointed out. Then let them spin in a circle for 5 seconds and wherever their finger lands, that’s where they have to “travel” to. This will also work best if you have a large world map mat. Once they’ve “traveled” to the spot their finger pointed to, create a pose for that location. Or make up a story and have the kids act out the animals or objects mentioned in the story.
3. Easily Distracted
Using the distractibility of the kids to your advantage by mixing up your yoga session to keep them engaged.
Create animated poses – this is when you have kids imitate an object such as a lamp, candle, or car. Have kids act out a light switching on or a candle flickering. You can have children balance small light objects on their heads or have their balance on a small yoga ball. This will create some laughs keeping the yoga session light and playful.
4. They Love Playing Games
Kids love playing games and this can be used to your advantage. Play a famous game called “Simon Says”. This will make things interesting and also build their listening and motor skills. Have them dance or skip around and then stand still like a statue. Play a game where they get to move around or dance around crazy and then freeze.
Making yoga fun and interactive is one of the most important things when it comes to kids. Not only will all the games and fast-paced activities keep them engaged, but it’ll also ensure that they develop the necessary life skills. Kids’ yoga is a great way of building the necessary motor, social, and emotional skills that kids need to develop to the best that they can in life. It’ll help them build their level of understanding regarding instructions as well as their level of empathy.
