
What might seem like ten minutes to us, could seem like an hour to our kids. When it comes to trying to figure out how long kids should do yoga, we might be scratching our heads.
We don’t exactly want this amazing practice to go to waste by it seeming monotonous or redundant to our kids. We want them to enjoy yoga just as much as we do and even continue to do so until they’re well into adulthood.
Just like not every child is not the same, there might be different time recommendations strictly for your kid alone. Maybe your kid naturally gets bored very quickly or you’re blessed with a very content child that’s happy to go with the flow.
Just like the vast amount of personalities, there could be a great routine for each kid. However, this wholly depends on their personal preference.
According to science, there’s a golden number we should try and stick to whether or not your child gets bored quickly or not. They’ll adapt, if not, then it’s not for them. Though this advice is bad, it can give you an idea of the capabilities of your child.
Special 15-minute rule
15 minutes might not be enough for us, however, it’s more than enough for people half our size and age. For some young kids, 15 minutes might even be too long. The time frame does vary depending on the age of your child, but if we’re referring to children between the ages of five and nine then it’s 15 minutes.
15 minutes a day is all that’s needed for your child to reap all the benefits of yoga. Along with the 15 minutes, children should hold yoga poses for 10-15 seconds long. This also depends on their unique abilities and the age of the child.
When children practice yoga for at least 15 minutes a day, your child will easily develop some of the most amazing benefits that yoga has to offer. Depending on your child’s health conditions, your child will develop a lot of muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance.
Many parents of asthmatic children have said that their asthma has improved drastically over the first few months of practicing yoga.
It has been said that you should not break the 15-minute rule, however, this rule can be bent at the beginning of yoga practice or if your kid naturally tires out. If your child has specific limitations, it is important to let the yoga instructor know of this.
What can be done to make yoga easier and better for your child by following a certain sequence? Have your child use a pillow or a blanket that’ll help them sit up straight. Have them close their eyes and just listen to your instruction.
Ask your child to place their hands on their stomachs or ribs and to breathe in and out slowly. When they do this, ask them what they feel or how it feels when they do that. This will give you a good idea of what their limit is.
Do this check-in every 5 minutes during their yoga session to ensure that they’re not exhausting themselves.
Practicing yoga for 15 minutes a day should be the aim of every child. However, we shouldn’t exhaust them or push them beyond their natural capabilities but rather use them as a guide to better their health, stress, and mental stamina in their daily lives.
